Meissen, often referred to as “the Cradle of Saxony”, is one of Germany’s oldest cities. The first castle was built here in 929 AD. In 968 Meissen became a bishopric and its city charter was granted in around 1200. Meissens historical importance declined in the 15th century as it was displaced by Dresden.
The city scape is dominated by the wonderful Gothic Albrechtsburg Castle and the magnificent Early Gothic Cathedral. Outstanding porcelain from all periods is on show at the exhibition hall of the Meissen porcelain factory. Visitors can enjoy educational demonstrations of the porcelain makers craft at the show workshop
